What is local SEO? If you run any kind or local services or products business then you might just have asked yourself that very question! “What is local SEO?” Or maybe even just “what is SEO?”

When having various chats lately with entrepreneurs lately, I have realised that when it comes to SEO most people think it’s just one big thing.

Truth is SEO takes various forms . So over the next few weeks I thought I would take the chance to talk about the various types of SEO to help you decide which one best suits your business.

What Is Local SEO?

Today though I thought it would be good to start with Local SEO. If you have a bricks and mortar business this is the one that is most likely to work best for you.

So what is local SEO? Local SEO is essentially a way of marketing your business using the search engines to a targeted local audience. In other words it’s trying to rank your website for searches that local customers are asking.

Now when it comes to local SEO you tend to find the search volume is lower. However, as its more targeted the conversion rates tend to be higher.

So for example over on our website design and SEO consulting business, we have a lot of Local SEO clients.

We have a photographer who is specialises in baby and family photography in Paisley. So for her we target baby photography Paisley as one of her search terms. Now that phrase only gets around 100 searches a month.

However it’s a highly targeted market and it also tends to be a “buying phrase” which means the are looking to book.

So for those 100 searches a month , getting her to the top of Page 1 in Google brings her around 40 – 50 people who will click on her site, of those people who click through to her site she will book in around 10 – 15 of those which means she fills over half her available photography slots each month.

She ranks for similar phrases for her family photography and cake smash photography which mean those local searches pretty much book her out each month.

Thats how local SEO works. You have a product or service that is ideal for a local market and you rank your website for those search phrases. They numbers of searches each month might not look like much but because most of the time its a highly targeted market using buying search phrases the results you will get are amazing!

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start to target your local market! (download my FREE SEO checklist to help you get started)
